Our global challenge: decarbonization
The challenge of decarbonization is twofold: we must simultaneously support rapidly growing energy demands, while reducing CO2 emissions to meet the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement.
As this chart shows, our current course is far from where it needs to be. Achieving the Paris objective of limiting global temperature increase to 1.5°C by 2050 will require a “Sustainable Development” scenario pathway. However, it is worth noting that energy needs are expected to grow by as much as 54% during that same period. No single, simple solution can therefore transform the global energy system. It will require a combination of technologies and fuels.
