How the outside temperature affects your data center cooling system and pizza baking.
Data center cooling and pizza baking? Yes! It may sound peculiar, but both cooling systems and pizza baking are heavily influenced by the temperature of the air.
When you make pizza dough and want it to leaven, it is heavily influenced by the air temperature. You can speed it up with warmer air or slow it down with cooler air. The same affect is relevant to your data center cooling system.
You design a cooling system for a certain load, but then the temperature outside drops and you throttle it down to accommodate the more favorable conditions and to use less resources, but there are unintended consequences you may not have considered.
Join Data Center Cooling experts, Cosimo Pecchioli (the pizza maker!) and Kristi Smith, for a fun and relaxed conversation about the problems of partial flow in cooling systems and the unwanted consequence of fouling or ending up with “dough” in your heat exchanger.
What you’ll learn:
- What is partial flow and why it may be a challenge for a heat exchanger?
- What possible solutions are available to minimize that risk?
- How to bake a true Italian pizza! For real, Cosimo will bake a pizza at the same time he and Kristi are dropping knowledge!
About the speakers
Cosimo Pecchioli is a part of the Alfa Laval Data Centers Cooling Solution Team. Originally from Italy, he graduated with an Engineering degree at the University of Florence and has been with Alfa Laval for 17 years working in many different markets and applications both in Europe and the US. In the last 7 years, he primarily focused on heat transfer. He is based in the San Francisco bay area and has been baking his own pizza for more than 30 years!
Kristi Smith is also a part of the Data Centers Cooling Solution Team. Kristi graduated from Western Michigan University and has been with Alfa Laval for 8 years. Kristi’s experience includes over 13 years troubleshooting heat exchangers, and in particular, partial flow challenges in data centers. Kristi is based in Charlotte, North Carolina and has had the pleasure of enjoying Cosimo’s pizza!
