New marine fuels and marine biofuels for engines propulsion

Marine-biofuels-vignette640x360.jpg

As the marine industry strives to decarbonize, biofuels are an attractive option for reducing its CO2 footprint.

With the same equipment as is used on today’s vessels, biofuels can provide carbon neutrality when produced from the right biomass. However, they also raise significant new challenges, especially when it comes to storage and treatment.

We help ship owners and operators secure confident compliance with marine legislation for over 100 years, both through dedicated compliance technologies and by supporting the move to new fuels and dedicated marine biofuels like LNG, methanol, ammoniac, LPG.

Understand marine biofuels

The first step in succeeding with marine biofuels is understanding the challenges. Even the most prominent biofuel types, FAME (fatty acid methyl ester) and HVO (hydrotreated vegetable oil), behave much differently from traditional fuels. As a result, they require careful management on board and excellent control over the separation process. Our white paper puts these biofuels in focus, explaining what to expect and consider when it comes to your fuel line.

New marine shipping innovations and decarbonization solutions

Fluidic Air Lubrication (FAL) - Alfa Laval OceanGlide

Alfa Laval keep pushing Marine innovation with the acquisition of Marine Performance Systems B.V., a Rotterdam-based maritime technology company that has developed the first Fluidic Air Lubrication (FAL) system on the market.

This innovation will enable Alfa Laval to bring this environment-friendly technology to market contributing significantly towards improving ship efficiency, reducing fuel consumption, and minimizing emissions from ships.

This technology will enable shipowners to improve the IMO CII ratings of their fleet.

Carbon Capture and Storage - Capture and use shipboard CO2

Onboard carbon capture and storage (CCS) can play a crucial role in decarbonizing shipping.

By implementing carbon capture and storage solutions on board ships, we can significantly reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from marine engines and thus contribute to the fight against climate change.

IMO objectives

Innovative shipboard carbon recovery solutions in the marine industry play a key role in achieving the objectives of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), notably by contributing to the reduction of greenhouse gases (GHGs).

Fuel savings

In addition to the obvious environmental benefits, carbon recovery on board ships also generates significant savings (OPEX and CAPEX index).

These significant savings can help make shipping more profitable and support the transition to more sustainable operations.

At the forefront of innovation

Alfa Laval is a technology partner in the joint project launched by the Global Center for Maritime Decarbonisation (GCMD), Oil and Gas Climate Initiative (OGCI) and Stena Bulk to study carbon dioxide (CO2) capture, storage and offloading from ships.

Alfa Laval is bringing its technological and engineering expertise to the project to help understand the challenges and opportunities of deploying carbon capture technology on ships.

Retrofit & equipment upgrades to extend your vessel’s operational capabilities

Maintenance, reparation, and upgrade your equipment to ensure your vessel to keep optimal on-sea performances. Alfa Laval provides a cost-effective replacement according to your specifications – even on an emergency basis.

Replacement of obsolete equipment on the existing fleet

The lifespan of a vessel is at least 30 years. The equipment installed when the vessel is new no longer corresponds to the new regulations in force and to energy efficiency constraints. Energy optimization, required by the new EEXI indicators, forces ship owners to continuously work on the energy profile of their engine room.

Alfa Laval is aware of these challenges and offers complete assessments of your equipment and suggests actions to be taken to extend the life of your vessels.

Refer to all the Alfa Laval portfolio previously on the page to find the solutions your ship needs.

Alfa Laval Marine genuine spare parts

At sea, reliability is paramount. When you use genuine Alfa Laval spare parts, you can be sure of functional equipment and maximum performance. Our parts and maintenance kits extend the life of your equipment, reducing your operating expenses (OPEX).

Taking other company or non-genuine sparts part will surely lead to equipment issues such as breakdowns, leaks or even having the machines being stopped. The cost of maintenance behind or having to replace a machine is way higher.
